The Bam Bam Martial Arts Basic Jiu Jitsu Curriculum
The primary purpose of jiu jitsu is to teach a student how to physically defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, and more athletic attacker. Unlike striking based martial arts, which work best on people your size or smaller, jiu jitsu works on EVERYBODY by teaching the student how to use techniques that maximize leverage against vulnerable targets on the attacker’s body. This focus is what makes jiu jitsu the single most effective self-defense system in the world.
Training Philosophy
Unlike most jiu jitsu schools, we do not teach beginners how to perform well in jiu jitsu tournaments. Most "tournament techniques" do not work in a real fight against an attacker who is punching you and hence, spending precious training time in the beginning on such sport techniques can hinder your performance in a real-life altercation.
However, there are hundreds, even thousands of techniques in this martial art. Where does one begin?
Focus On The Most Common And Effective Moves
Our philosophy is that the primary goal for every student is to learn how to defend themselves against a bigger and stronger attacker. And that while there are thousands of moves in jiu jitsu, not all of them are equally important.
In fact, numerous studies have shown that there are 40 moves that proven to be extremely effective in real life altercations, and these 40 moves also cover the most common situations you will encounter in a real street fight.
So the purpose of the basic program is to help the student focus and master these 40 most essential moves.
These 40 moves consist of 15 standing moves and 25 ground moves and are taught over the course of 25 lessons. Each lesson will cover at least one standing technique and one ground technique (along with variations).
By honing our focus on these moves, we can train a student to be "street ready" in the shortest amount of time possible.
Guidelines:
Our basic program follows three guidelines:
- 1First is street applicability. All of the techniques in our basic program are "punch proof" meaning that they student cannot be punched hard while performing them. In other words, these techniques are fully street applicable. Mastering techniques that are not punch proof can lead the student into a false sense of security.
- 2Second is energy efficiency. Techniques that rely on speed and power instead of leverage and timing burns precious energy and can leave the student exhausted. Real fights have no time limit. The jiu jitsu student must learn how to fight while saving their energy. The most reliable way to beat a larger attacker is to use techniques that cause the attacker to exhaust their energy while preserving your own.
- 3Third is natural body movements. Any technique that requires a student to be exceptionally flexible or move in unnatural ways is not practical for most people. Hence, techniques that utilize natural body movements are the best foundation for a fight.
Defense Strategy:
The basic program is based on a simple 4 step defense strategy:
- 1Manage the distance while standing in order to not get punched.
- 2Clinch and take the bad guy to the ground where he likely has less knowledge and is unable to punch effectively.
- 3Establish a dominant position in order to stay safe while you control him as he exhaust’s his energy, and finally.
- 4Finish the fight with a submission technique, the best of all being a stranglehold since these are holds that work on all attackers, regardless of size, toughness and determination to fight.
