Basic Jiu Jitsu Curriculum – Lesson 16b – Side Control To RNC

Side Control: Take The Back To RNC Overview: Side control is a strong holding position and for that reason, a good way to exhaust your opponent’s energy. Once the BG is exhausted, you can easily take his back to get the RNC. This lesson will teach you how.

Near Side Back Take To RNC: You are controlling BG in side control with your shoulder in his face. Keeping the pressure on his face, lift your knee up and drive it into the side of his head (you can also use the side head butt from here to generate panic). This should encourage him to turn away. Relax some pressure to let BG turn. Lock up the seatbelt, insert the hooks and take the back.

Jiu Jitsu Drill: Starting in side control, spin to the other side, partner turns away to expose back, hit the seatbelt and slide in to back but then release it and go back to side control. Repeat on the other side.

Closing Statement: Side control is a very common position to be in and is a great way to pin a BG down and make him exhaust his energy. Once exhausted, you can use strikes to encourage him to turn away and expose his back on the near side. Once you have his back, close the deal with the RNC.
