Basic Jiu Jitsu Curriculum – Lesson 15c – The Ankle Pull Sweep Tall Guy Variation

Tall Guy Variation: If he is too tall and your knees are not long enough to tip him back, the knee thrust won’t work. In this case, kick his hips back with your feet. But when you do that he will fall but he’s too far away to mount directly. So here’s what you need to do. Technical stand up. Put one hand down and base on that hand and the opposite foot. Draw you near foot straight back to a “horse stance”. Keep you other hand protecting your face. Keep him down with your hands. Go straight to mount or side control and then mount. Throw his legs out of the way if need be. If he sits up, push him back down.

Jiu Jitsu Drill: Ankle Pull Sweep and Elbow Escapes: Op in guard, punch block stage 1, stand, ankle pull sweep, mount, elbow escape (all variations - standard, grapevine, fish hook, leg drag) to guard, punch block stage 1, stand up, ankle pull sweep, repeat.

Closing Statement: remember, the number one rule from the guard is to first chill and neutralize punches. From there. it is very common for a BG to stand up in your guard with his feet close enough to grab. When this happens, the ankle pull sweep is your move. It is an extremely powerful sweep that puts him down and gives you the opportunity to get the mount.
