Shrimp and Shoot Punch Block Variation: For use when BG is punching from side control. You cannot escape yet because it is too tight. CHILL. WAIT. Practice patience and punch protection. Hold him in the punch safe position: hold his neck down, hold his tricep on the other hand, head up, relax and don’t burn energy (you can open or lock your hands – locking hands is stronger). Principle: He cannot control you well and hit you hard at the same time. As he tries to make space to hit you (by maybe putting his hands on the floor and pushing away), shrimp and scoot.
Jiu Jitsu Drill: You need to recognize the difference between escaping the side control vs escaping the headlock. BG start on the knees next to you. Grab in headlock or side control. Practice all variations of the shrimp escape with all variation of the headlock escape (frame, leg hook, punch block from headlock). Drill with progressive resistance.
Closing Statement: Don't let a BG get you trapped on the bottom in side control if you can help it. But if it happens, chill as you neutralize the punches and wait for an opportunity to escape. YOU MUST KNOW WHEN TO RELAX AND DO NOTHING. This is one of those times. Don't panic and burn your energy down there.
