The Psychology of Winning: Ten Qualities Of A Total Winner
Study Guide Chapter 4:
“Positive Self-Motivation”
What is positive self-motivation?
Positive self-motivation is having a strong desire for achievement.
Winners in life are people who have a strong desire for improvement. They want better things and they can move themselves to set goals, make a plan and take action on that plan and keep going until they reach their goals.
Low achievers sit around and wait for other people and events to motivate them towards their goals. That rarely happens and even when it does it does not last.
Why is positive self-motivation important?
If you do not have an inner drive that is strong enough to move you to take action, you will never achieve success in important things.
Other people can give you direction and encouragement but in the end it is up to you to get excited. All of the external encouragement in the world will not help you reach your goals until you care enough to move yourself in the direction of the goals you have set.
Action Item: Make a list of three of the most important things you want out of life. Then, do these things to develop more self-motivation
- Break big goals into smaller easier to achieve goals. Break big goals down into milestones. You want to lose 50 pounds? Lose 10 pounds first. You want a black belt? Set a goal to earn your yellow belt this year.
- Commit publicly. By ourselves, it is easy to slack off and lose motivation. We are quick to let ourselves off the hook, procrastinate, and find reasons for giving up on our goals. Share your goals with your friends and family. This will give you a support system and help you to feel more accountable for achieving your goal.
- Create your own routine and rituals. It’s important to develop daily rituals (HABITS) that will keep you inspired and moving forward toward your goal.
- Visualize your goals every day - Keep them always in your mind. Write them down and look at them every day when you get up and before you go to bed.
