What is positive self-esteem?
Positive self-esteem is having a deep down feeling that you are an important and valuable person. Your level of self-esteem is measured by how much you like yourself.
When someone doesn’t like themselves much, they have low self-esteem. And in the same way, people who like themselves a lot have high levels of self-esteem.
Why is positive self-esteem important?
Positive self-esteem is critical for your happiness. It is impossible to be a happy person and not like who you are. Winners and high achievers always have high levels of self-esteem.

Do these things that are proven to build your self-esteem:
- Get Really Good At Something Hard – Confidence and self-esteem are based upon experiencing success, especially success in something difficult. Getting your black belt in jiu jitsu is GREAT for this (see below)
- Exercise And Eat Healthy – exercise and proper diet improve your appearance, mood, and how you feel about yourself
- Dress Well To Look Your Best – personal grooming and appearance can really change how you feel on the inside
- Act Confident - Have a confident posture – stand tall with your chin up and shoulders back. Acting like you are confident will make you feel more confident on the inside
- Build a Confidence List – Think about your reasons for having self-esteem right now. List all of your past successes and times people gave you compliments. Update it all the time. Over time this list will be huge. Review this list often, especially when you are feeling down.
- Practice Positive Self-Talk! This is one of the most important ways to develop self-esteem. Imagine yourself as a winner. Tell yourself “I am a winner”. Research has shown that talking to yourself can have a big impact on your body functions
- Train Your Mind – educate yourself, read and study. Do well in school. This will give you intellectual self-esteem.
- Keep Training In Jiu Jitsu! JJ is a great way to build self-esteem. It’s not the only way to build self-esteem but it is a good way and it offers a lot of other benefits too. Imagine when you reach your goal and get your black belt some day! That will do a lot for your self-esteem!
