Basic Jiu Jitsu Curriculum – Lesson 18b – Kimura From Guard Basic Version

The Kimura Lock Overview:

The Kimura lock is a very powerful and versatile lock you can do from many positions. We will be learning how to do it from the bottom of a fight.

Basic Kimura Lock in Three Steps:

Step 1 -  Grab The Wrist

  1. 1
Starting with BG’s hands on the ground, grab his wrist

Step 2 -  Sit Up To Lock

  1. 1
Come up on that elbow of the grabbing arm, and situ up as your reach over his arm and grab your own wrist.
  2. 2
If it is hard to reach over the arm to get the lock, bring your wrapping arm lower.
  3. 3
You now have the figure four kimura lock from a seated position with BG in your guard

Step 3 -  Lay Down and Break

  1. 1
Push off the ground with the legs,
  2. 2
Lay back and scoot out to the side to turn and look at him
  3. 3
Bring his elbow to the shoulder line as you throw your leg over his back
  4. 4
Execute a pull dominant kimura (80% of the power is pulling his elbow, 20% is pushing the hand) as you are turned looking at your opponent.
  5. 5
Don't lock with the arm out away from your body. Keep it wedged against you for power.

Remember this phrase for the Kimura:

“IF YOU WANT YOUR KIMURA TO BE FINE, BRING HIS ELBOW TO THE SHOULDER LINE”
